THE PURE EDIT

Racé, Passé, or Déclassé?

On the trends that start dinner-party arguments.

Crocs

In style, crocodile?
A turquoise Croc floating on a garden pond.

“I hate Crocs.” It is not the hottest of takes, but it is a popular one. And yet the foam clog remains one of the best-selling shoes on earth, worn by children and adults alike. Funny how that works.

Let us be clear about where the scorn lands. Nobody is begrudging the toddler padding around a splash pad, or the little feet at the beach. The disdain is reserved for adults who dare to enjoy comfort, cushion, and a marshmallow silhouette. The nerve.

We understand the instinct. But then we saw beach babe turned gardening maven Pamela Anderson tending her garden in optic white Crocs and white overalls, and it was quite possibly the chicest thing ever to happen to foam. So we bought a white pair of our own. They were also terribly affordable, which is not a sentence one gets to say about many chic things.

We wore ours to Disneyland, and it was the only time our feet did not hurt there. We garden in them daily, and they rinse clean with a hose. They accommodate a wide foot and a high instep, come in a rainbow of colors, and there is something about a pillowy clog that sets off a calf. Call it the sleeper hit of the lower leg.

The naysayers can snap all they like. We’ll just give them our best crocodile smile while wearing our favorite pair.

Our verdict: Racé.

A classic green, white, red, yellow, or navy Croc, or even a girly ballet pink, is perfectly lovely in the right setting: the garden, the beach, a sunny errand or two. Picture denim overalls, a silver watering can, deep green Crocs, and a matching kerchief over the hair. Perfection.

Jibbitz, however…we will save for a future column.
